Articles > With Joy They Hailed Its Light

  BY: Pastor Bruce Linderman

"The Wise Men were overjoyed," Matthew states in Matthew 2:1-12. They were exceedingly happy when the familiar star they had first seen in the East reappeared in the heavens to guide them to the Christ Child in Bethlehem. They had come to think of this star as a reliable and faithful friend along the way. Now they were sure they would find the newborn King and Savior of Jews and Gentiles.

The Gospel, the Word of God, is a familiar friend, leading us to the most reliable and faithful friend we will ever know: Jesus Christ. Scripture is our guiding light, a bright star directing our footsteps to Him who is the Star of Jacob, the bright Morning Star, the Dayspring from on high, the Light of the world. This we declare of the written Word: "Bright as a lamp its teachings shine To guide our souls to heav’n."

Christians experience a special joy and happiness when the Word of God leads them to the Savior, to Him who is the Word personified. It is a delight to be welcomed into the presence of Jesus Christ, true God and true man. Salvation is found in Him alone. The truth is we cannot earn His salvation by our good and righteous living, even though many think that is the case. We are totally sinful and Jesus died for our sins and rose again for our salvation and eternal life. It is His completely free gift to us who believe in Him.

Joy and thankfulness cause us to open our treasures to Him and to serve Him as our King. Our joy and gratitude increase each time we do so. The best offering we can bring is the gift of self, as St. Paul wrote of the Macedonians, "They gave themselves first to the Lord" (2 Corinthians. 8:5).

To God be the Glory for our salvation, Jesus Christ, the Light of the world!
