Articles > Lutheran Reformation

  BY: Pastor Bruce Linderman

In Memorial Estates Cemetery near Chicago, one can see a massive stone Bible weighing 37 tons - thought to be the largest in the world. While such a monument is impressive, it cannot begin to represent the true strength of the Word of God, which prompted England's prime minister, William E. Gladstone to speak of "impregnable rock of Holy Scripture."

In October we celebrate the Lutheran Reformation on October 31st! The Word of God, written by the inspired prophets and apostles, is central to the Reformation. Martin Luther had us sing, "A Mighty Fortress is our God" because He has given us His might in which we take refuge. In defiance of all enemies of the pure Gospel, this Word "they still shall let remain" for the simple reason that they cannot destroy it.

The word of God proclaims the Valiant one, Jesus Christ, the Saboath Lord and sold Savior. Sola Scrptura - Scripture Alone" - is written in large letters on Reformation banners, for it testifies to Christ alone as the Savior from sin. "Scripture Alone" strips away human philosophy and reason as co-sources of doctrine. Jesus stood firmly on the "It is written" of the Holy Scripture because it could not be broken.

As the sole source of Christian doctrine, Holy Scripture can and does teach authoritatively the other two great principals of the Reformation: "Grace Alone" and "Faith Alone." The apostle Paul teaches very clearly, "It is by grace you have been saved, through faith • and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God - not by works, so that no one can boast" [Eph. 2:8 - 9]. The simple fact is one cannot earn or merit salvation by their good and upright living. It is totally a gift from God by Grace. That is why all glory belongs to God.

This we teach and live in the Christian faith. We want to share it with everyone. We encourage all to attend church and Sunday School on Sundays. If you ever need a ride to Grace Lutheran Church please call 285-6865 or 570-3850 and we will provide transportation for you or your children. God bless our efforts in sharing the Lord Jesus Christ with all!
